Online Maths Tuition Junior Cert Level

Never drive your child to maths grinds again!

With the progress made in educational technology, it is now possible to provide high-quality maths tuition online that not only matches in-person tuition but in many ways outperforms it. I will give you some reasons to back this assertion up in the following paragraphs, but you have to agree that if this is true, then the relief of not having to drive through traffic to get to a tutor’s office on time is considerable both for yourself as a parent and also for your child. Your time is precious and online tuition will definitely free up time for all concerned.

Make it feel less like a chore

Let’s be honest, having to sit through a maths grind is not the highlight of any Childs day, but when you add to that the time spent driving to and from grinds, you’re talking about in some cases up to 2 hours out of their after-school time. In recent years due to lockdown restrictions, I had to tutor all my students online. And even though there is now the option to have lessons in my home, some students have opted to continue online. For many, it works just as well as in person and is so much more convenient. Of course, not all students are the same and a percentage do prefer in person. So I always offer any new student, that comes to me, the chance to try out one class online before they decide on which tutoring method to take.

But my child didn’t enjoy online classes during the lockdown

I’m a private maths tutor, so I don’t have first-hand experience of how online classes were run by schools during the lockdown period, but it’s very important to understand that the kind of online tuition, that I offer will be almost completely different from what schools can offer. This is not to disrespect teachers, who are limited in the things they can achieve with a large class. They cannot give one-to-one tuition to each child an hour at a time. This is just not practical because of the numbers involved. So they are limited to a combination of assigning homework and passing on notes and in some cases doing zoom lectures. So how are my classes better?

Interaction is the key to success

I teach my classes through Zoom using an online whiteboard. I don’t give lectures and consequently, my students are not zoning out during my classes. We constantly talk to each other whilst going over problems on a whiteboard. I have a calm and patient approach.

Any mistake I see the student make can be immediately corrected, as we both can write on the whiteboard at the same time and chat with each other over Zoom. We can also see each other as well, so it is very much a personal experience and I can easily see if the student is understanding what I am teaching.

Learn how to break down complex word problems

Very often we will be covering exam questions where I try to not only show the student how to solve a particular problem but also try to show them how I think through that kind of problem and explain to them the system that I use to break down its complexity. This means that when they come across more unfamiliar questions, they will be confident at least that they have a robust system of approaching these. In the long run, this approach benefits the student more as it goes beyond simply showing them the steps of a solution. I also find that this way of thinking is also very transferable to other subjects apart from maths.

All work saved in one place

We will be working off one single whiteboard each week. The student can return to this page any time simply by clicking on its link. So they are free to return to review at any time work carried out in previous classes.

Email me your questions service

If a student gets stuck on a question during the week he/she can take a quick photo of the question and email it to me. I’ll have it prepared and uploaded to the whiteboard ready to discuss in the next online class. Students can send me as many questions as they want using this service. The more questions students send me the more honed in I get on the areas they really need help in. Ultimately the online grinds are tailored to the particular needs of each individual student, something that is very hard to replicate in the school system. It’s about making sure the student is engaged and feels that his/her needs are being met and understood.
